A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes into the Earth's shadow. The eclipse has just started in the image at the upper left and progressed to totality in the lower right image. During the total phase of an eclipse the Moon takes on a deep coppery color which is quite spectacular when viewed against a starry background on a clear night.
